Taking the next step to acquire a new Antarctic icebreaker - media release 31 July 2014

Minister for the Environment. The Australian Government has taken a significant step towards procuring a next-generation icebreaker to replace the ageing Aurora Australis , through the release of a detailed Request for Tender (RFT) to two prequalified companies. Incorporating modern, sophisticated technology into Australia's only icebreaking scientific research platform, the new ship will provide a new generation of capability appropriate to Australia's role as a leading Antarctic nation.
