Australia?s unemployment rate edges up slightly but remains one of the lowest in the industrialised world | Ministers' Media Centre
Labour force figures released today by the ABS show that the ongoing financial volatility on global markets and the deterioration in world growth is beginning to impact on the Australian labour market. Against this background, the unemployment rate rose slightly, by 0.1 percentage points to 5.2 per cent (in line with market expectations) but remains one of the lowest rates of unemployment in the industrialised world and less than half that of the Euro area. The number of people looking for work also increased in February, by 16400 to stand at 632200, while the labour force participation rate declined slightly, by 0.1 percentage points to 65.2 per cent.
